Young Aces of 1963
The Young Aces of 1963 card is number 219 from Topps in 1964.
From back of card The New York Yankees' pitching staff received a real shot in the arm last season when Al Downing and Jim Bouton developed into frontline hurlers. Al was pitching for Richmond in the International League when the '63 season began, but in early June the southpaw was caled up to the Yankee Stadium. Among Al's finest performances, the lefty fired a one-hitter vs. the White Sox, plus a two-hitter vs. the Senators and the White Sox. Al chalked up 13 wins and posted the 5th best earned run average in the A.L.
Teammate Jim Bouton is a hard-throwing righthander who won 21 ballgames in his sophomore season in 1963. Besides posting the fourth best E.R.A. in the A.L., the youngster won a start in the World Series vs. the Dodgers. Pitching splendidly, Jim lost a 1-0 pitching duel to Don Drysdale.
